The great thing about this project is that the fabric needed is such a small amount that you can use up some of the tiny, otherwise useless scraps left over from old projects. (I used a scrap of fabric that was used years ago by my grandmother to make some clothes for my mom.)
You will need:
- Scrap fabric
- Needle and thread (or a sewing machine)
- 2 Thin, small magnets
Fold your fabric in half, length-wise and inside out, and sew down the open side and one of the ends, either with a sewing machine or by hand (if you're sewing by hand, I recommend a running back stitch).
Use a pencil to help turn your fabric right side out. Then, slide your first magnet in all the way to the bottom of the pouch/tube. Run a quick couple stitches to secure your first magnet in the bottom of the bookmark.
Then, slide your second magnet in and sew the top of the bookmark closed. You can fold the ends in and stitch it up neatly, but I kind of like an overly obvious stitching in a contrasting color.
Finally, slide your second magnet up to the top as far as it will go and run a few quick stitches to secure it in place. The bookmark will hug your page and keep your place for you!
So, what are you reading?
Another great DIY. You are so creative! I cannot BELIEVE that you found that skirt for $5. Insane. I wonder if they have other colors...

I love this thoughtful DIY project! Reading is one of my hobbies so I know I would find this useful. Just.... I dont know how to use a sewing machine yet! When I was in girl scouts we were learning how to sew by hand, lol. I'd love a simple tutorial on how to use a machine one day! Love your blog : ) What are you reading?

Thanks so much for your comment!! :) I have a sewing machine in the basement, but I'm embarrassed to say I haven't used it yet! I did this project by hand instead :) Once I get more familiar with my sewing machine, I'll try and put together a simple little tutorial.
DeleteI'm reading Bowl of Cherries, some short stories by Chekhov, and I just finished (re)reading The Great Gatsby.
Very great idea :)

I like this project! I am always losing my book marks. This might help. Although I have a kindle, I am old fashioned. I like reading real books. I'm afraid I haven't had time to read anything for my self. I just read "Skippyjon Jones Cirque de Ole" to my daughter. I'll have to squirrel away some time for myself to read!
ReplyDeleteGirl, you've been on a roll with these diy posts! Another great one. Oh and I totally think you should still do the bobby pin thing...maybe a fun color block look would be fun? Have a great weekend :)
